Last weekend was the inaugural Overton Scarecrow Festival. It's was a superb event, which shouldn't come as a surprise as Overton is a boss little place with an amazing sense of community spirit. Hundreds of scarecrows lined the streets and there was barely a house in the village that didn't have one on display. I take my hat off to all the locals for the lengths they went to make imaginative creations. The irreverence and general sense of silliness were spot on. My favourites were Rapunzel with her locks flowing down from the top floor of the hair salon, the BT Openreach engineers up the telegraph pole, and this traffic policeman who I'm sure succeeded in scaring a few people, which seemed appropriate somehow.I'm looking forward to the day when Finn is old enough that we can make scarecrows together and gatecrash Overton's party. I might need to work on my scarecrow-making skills before then.
My only experience to date comes from a childish afternoon in the Spring of 1998 during my second year at university. Jamie and I thought it would be funny (it was hilarious) to dangle a pair of legs from our top-storey living room window in the hope of provoking a horrified response from Claire and Emma living downstairs.
