Chris and I were granted access to former prime minister Sir John Major this week, on the proviso that we didn't ask him anything controversial. I asked him if he would mind sitting down on a small chair and helping with a jigsaw. He said "no", in the nicest possible way. I think he was scared that he'd not be able to get up again, and that I'd be there waiting for it to happen. He had a superbly bone-crushing handshake, which was the last thing I expected from him, and he was also very charming.
