Here are the answers to some questions I frequently get asked. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to call me on 07968 174 072 or email andrew@mccargow.com. Where are you based? Where do you shoot weddings? Can you tell me more about yourself? You call yourself a photojournalistic wedding photographer. What does that mean? Do you take any posed photographs? Do you take any group shots? What equipment do you use? Do you have an assistant? How many photographs do you take? How many do we get? What digital processing do you do? How long do you stay at the wedding? How are you going to make me look good? Are you available for my wedding? How can I book you? Where are you based? I live in Winchester, Hampshire. Where do you shoot weddings? I shoot weddings predominantly in Hampshire although I do travel further and have covered weddings as far afield as Texas and California. For weddings outside a 50 mile radius I charge a modest amount to cover the cost of travel and lodging at the local B&B. Can you tell me more about yourself? Sure. Check out my bio and my blog to see my day-to-day work. You call yourself a photojournalistic wedding photographer. What does that mean? For me, this means two things. Firstly, photojournalisic/documentary/reportage are all poncey ways of saying the same thing. As a photojournalistic wedding photographer, I take photographs of things as they happen, as a way of capturing images of people acting naturally. Not only does this make them look better but it also means your wedding day isn't taken up by posing for tons of photographs. We will spend a little time creating some bride/groom portraits but these are done in the same style, as naturally and efficiently as possible. It also means that I am a practising photojournalist- I produce photographs to accompany news stories and features in newspapers and magazines. I bring these skills to my wedding photography. Have a look at my blog to see a sample of my day-to-day work. Do you take any posed photographs? Most of the photographs I shoot are taken candidly. However, most couples like to spend a little time away from the party to produce a handful of semi-posed natural portraits that will still be on their wall in years to come. Some couples really enjoy this part and I'm happy to go spend longer on it if you request it. Do you take any group shots? While I'm conscious that guests can get bored hanging around waiting for the group shots, I also know a few of these images can be important for the bride, groom and guests. I recommend keeping group shots to a minimum but I am equipped to handle these as efficiently and painlessly as possible. What equipment do you use? I use whatever equipment is most appropriate for the job. Usually that means professional Nikon camera bodies and lenses. Depending on the quality of the available light I also use a group of Nikon flashguns. I also have backup equipment in case of something going wrong. Do you have an assistant? Not automatically but I have one available. I'm already one extra body taking up space at your wedding. That said, some couples go with the more-the-merrier philosophy, in which case a second-shooter who sees things differently can an add another dimension to the record of your day. We can talk about this. How many photographs do you take? How many do we get? I press the shutter perhaps 1,000 times for an average wedding. I edit these afterwards and aim for a final shortlist of 200 different images. What digital processing do you do? Digital trickery can never compensate for poorly taken photographs so getting an image right in-camera is a must. After shortlisting, I make only minor adjustments to each image in Photoshop. These include level-adjustments to tweak brightness, contrast and tonal range, careful cropping, and a little dodging and burning to lighten or darken certain areas which helps the viewer's eye to 'read' the image. If I'm asked to I can remove blemishes but otherwise I respect the authenticity of the image. Some images also look better in black and white so I apply my artistic judgement and make those conversions where necessary. How long do you stay at the wedding? Approximately 9 hours. Every wedding is different but I usually head first to the bride's parents' place for bridal preparations and stay at the reception until after the speeches/first dance. How are you going to make me look good? It's your wedding day- you're already looking beautiful and it's the happiest day of your life, so you're half way there. The rest comes from my skill as a photographer. Whether or not my camera is raised, in my mind I'm continuously analysing angles, shapes, and lighting, and anticipating situations to capture as flattering images as possible. Are you available for my wedding? Possibly. Please feel free to get in to get in touch for a no-obligation chat. You can call me on 07968 174 072 or email andrew@mccargow.com. If I'm not available on that day there are several other photographers whom I would be happy to recommend. How can I book you? Before I take any bookings I believe it's important to meet with couples to ensure they are 100% happy. You can give me a call on 07968 174 072 or email andrew@mccargow.com for a no-obligation appointment. |
